Using a home made face mask is not as effective as using an actual surgical mask, but it is still better than wearing nothing.

A protective mask may reduce the likelihood of infection, but it will not eliminate the risk, particularly when a disease has more than 1 route of transmission. Thus any mask, no matter how efficient at filtration or how good the seal, will have minimal effect if it is not used in conjunction with other preventative measures, such as isolation of infected cases, immunization, good respiratory etiquette, and regular hand hygiene. An improvised face mask should be viewed as the last possible alternative if a supply of commercial face masks is not available, irrespective of the disease against which it may be required for protection.

if i knew how to disinfect my truck i'd do so regularly. all the diseases i've been trained to handle, traveled in dirt and the important thing was to spray down the wheels with goop and wear covers on shoes. this stuff? no idea. i can't get a micron mask to wear.

Conclusions: DO NOT use alcohol and chlorine-based disinfection methods. These will remove the static charge in the microfibers in N95 facial masks, reducing filtration efficiency. In addition, chlorine also retains gas after de-contamination and these fumes may be harmful.

Well yeah, there hasn't been enough time for the places that have instituted lockdowns to show those results. I'm kind of skeptical of the efficacy of the lockdowns in general because of all the essential businesses. Turns out, they employ a lot of people, and when everyone can still go to the grocery store it's not going to do that much to slow down the curve. And is everyone supposed to stay locked down for a year and a half until we get vaccines or acquire herd immunity? That's an insane course of action.

Coronavirus pandemic could inflict emotional trauma and PTSD on an unprecedented scale, scientists warn

"The scale of this outbreak as a traumatic event is almost beyond comprehension," said Yuval Neria, the director of trauma and post-traumatic stress disorder at the New York State Psychiatric Institute and a professor of psychology at Columbia University Medical Center.

Neria, seeking a precedent to point to, said that not even the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks or World War II were adequate comparisons, as the anxiety those events caused was at least limited by geography. In this case, he said, "there are no boundaries."

Maybe we'll actually start taking healthcare and mental health problems seriously in the US now? Yeah... we can dream.
