It helps to use a real IRC client instead of the browser web chat. Some people like me prefer using command line clients running on servers, other people prefer using bouncers running on servers to relay messages to their desktop / mobile clients.

not being very good at irc was more of a 'oh gosh so many new people how do i get to know them better this place is kinda intimidating' kinda thing.
i knew the technical side of irc before.
