There was a giant explosion at a gas factory and 90% of all the N2O in the United States was lost in the blast.

Also, in Len Deighton's historical fiction novel bomber, there is a scene where a Junkers ju-88 night fighter uses nitrous injection oxide to successfully intercept a British pathfinder mosquito.
