I was thinking it meant if you get near that tube, you will be dissolved.  Your interpretation makes more sense mostly.  Also i have no clue what that picture from whispers is, but being from her its disconcerting indeed.

I think it's pine bark beetles, but I have no idea, the pictures of pine bark beetle larva / pupas I found online look nothing like that
